Initially, a process patent covered the methods of changing the functionality or characteristic of a material during a specific use or manufacturing process. Now, you can also patent a process in the form of software or combined hardware/software functions.
Of course, not all methods or processes can get a patent. Your idea for the process has to fulfill the rules of patentability, including falling into a patentable category.
As processes become more complex, they are often harder to patent. A detailed description of the process is required, as well as the correct drafting and positioning of the claims. It is highly advised that you should get help from a patent agent when filing for a process patent.
