What is a prior art search?

Prior Art Search is a crucial step in the patent application process. The objective is to find published information that is similar to the idea that you want to patent.

The prior art is everything published before the initial filing date of the patent, everywhere in the world and in every language. There are many types of the prior art.

So if you have an idea for an invention, or if you've already created the invention, you need to do a prior art search. The prior art search will turn up any inventions, ideas, products, or public information that may be similar to your idea. Keep in mind, patent examiners often reject applications because of the prior art.

The prior art search aims to:

  • Prove your idea is new and inventive

  • Check patents other people in your field are filing

  • Find out what competitors are doing, both for patents and products

  • Find out how strong your idea is
